Masik Shivratri commemorates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. It is also the night when Lord Shiva manifested as the "Jyotirlinga"—an infinite pillar of light—to resolve the dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding who was supreme. In another legend, a poor hunter named Lubdhaka was lost in a dark forest on Krishna Chaturdashi. To escape wild beasts, he climbed a Bilva tree. To stay awake, he kept plucking leaves and dropping them. Unknown to him, there was a Shiva Linga at the base of the tree. He had fasted all day out of hunger and stayed awake all night, unconsciously offering Bilva leaves to Shiva. At dawn, Lord Shiva appeared, moved by his devotion, and blessed him with liberation. Worshipping Shiva on this night helps seekers control their senses and attain ultimate peace.
