The legend of Pradosh is connected to the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the Devas and Asuras. During the churning, a lethal poison named Halahala emerged, capable of burning the entire universe. The terrified Devas rushed to Mount Kailash to seek shelter under Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, out of supreme compassion to save the creation, drank the poison. Mata Parvati placed her hand on His throat to stop the poison from descending into His stomach, causing His throat to turn blue. This earned Him the name "Neelakantha". This event took place on the Trayodashi Tithi. Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati danced in joy on Mount Kailash during the twilight hour (Pradosh Kaal), blessing all three worlds. Ever since, keeping a fast and worshipping Lord Shiva during this evening window is believed to wash away all sins, cure illnesses, and remove debts.
