Vinayaka Chaturthi commemorates the day Lord Ganesha was created by Mata Parvati from the clay of Her body to guard Her chambers. When Lord Shiva tried to enter, Ganesha stopped Him. Out of anger, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva promised to bring Him back to life. He instructed the Devas to bring the head of the first animal they found sleeping facing north. The Devas returned with an elephant's head. Shiva joined it to Ganesha's body, giving Him life and naming Him the chief (Ganapati) of His armies. Shiva blessed Ganesha that He would be worshipped first in all auspicious ceremonies. Worshipping Him at midday on Vinayaka Chaturthi removes ignorance and blesses the household with peace.
