The legend of Ekadashi is narrated in the Bhavishyottara Purana. In the Satyuga era, a terrifying demon named Mura terrorized all three worlds, defeating Indra and driving the Devas out of heaven. The Devas sought shelter with Lord Vishnu at the shore of the Kshirasagara. Lord Vishnu entered the battle and fought Mura for ten thousand years. Feeling tired, the Lord retreated to a cave named Himavati in Badrikashram to rest. Mura followed the Lord to slay Him. At that moment, a glowing, beautiful goddess carrying divine weapons emerged from the body of Lord Vishnu. She fought Mura and instantly cut off his head, saving the three worlds. When Lord Vishnu woke up and saw Mura slain, he asked the goddess who she was. She replied that she was born from His power (Shakti) on the eleventh day of the waning moon. Lord Vishnu, pleased by her valor, named her "Ekadashi" and granted her a boon: anyone who fasts on Ekadashi will have all their sins washed away, gain mental clarity, and attain liberation (Moksha) at the end of their life.
