In Vedic history, Amavasya is the day when the Sun and Moon are aligned in the same direction. It is the time when the barrier between the earthly plane and the Pitru Loka (ancestral realm) becomes thin. The ancestors visit their living descendants to receive love, prayers, and offerings. Legend says that a girl named Acchoda, born from the mind of Pitrus, once forgot her spiritual ancestry and fell in love with a mortal king. She lost her divine luster and fell to earth. Realizing her mistake, she prayed to the Pitrus on Amavasya. The Pitrus pardoned her and blessed her. From that day on, performing Shradh, Tarpan, and giving charity on Amavasya is considered the most sacred duty of a householder. It is believed to bring generational peace, remove pitru dosha (karmic debt of ancestors), and ensure that the children in the family flourish.
