Eat Sargi (traditional pre-dawn meal sent by mother-in-law) before sunrise.

Resolve the fast and spend the day in prayer and reading the Vrat Katha.

In the evening, perform Karwa Puja, placing a clay pot (Karwa) filled with water.

Listen to the legend of Queen Veervati and perform the circle ritual (Thali Batana).

Upon moonrise, view the moon through a sieve, offer Arghya, and take water from husband's hand.

The most popular legend of Karwa Chauth is of Queen Veervati, who had seven brothers. She kept her first fast at her parents' home. Weak with hunger, she fainted. Out of love, her brothers lit a fire behind a sieve on a hill, tricking her into believing the moon had risen. She broke her fast, and instantly received news that her husband was dead. She wept and prayed all year. Pleased, Mata Indrani instructed her to repeat the fast with full devotion. She did so, and her husband was revived.
