Ganesh Chaturthi marks the day Lord Ganesha was born from the clay of Mata Parvati's body. When Ganesha stood guard and stopped Lord Shiva from entering, Shiva severed His head. Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva promised to revive Him. The Devas brought the head of an elephant, which was joined to Ganesha's body, and Shiva declared Him the leader (Ganapati) of His armies and the first deity to be worshipped in all rituals.
